How to set up OpenVPN on Synology NAS

In this article, you will learn how to set up your Synology NAS with the OpenVPN protocol.

 

To proceed, you need to have a Synology NAS and an active Surfshark subscription. You can find the available plans on Surfshark’s pricing page.

Credentials and server selection

Before setting up the router, you will need to obtain the credentials for the manual setup and select a server to connect to.
 

NOTE: These are not your regular credentials, such as your email and password.
 

  1. Head to the Surfshark login page and log in. Then, click on VPN -> manual setup.



  2. Select set up manually.



  3. Choose the OpenVPN protocol.



  4. Once there, make sure that you are in the Credentials tab and click on Generate credentials



    NOTE: Keep this tab open or save the credentials, as we'll need them later.

 

Choose a Surfshark VPN server

  1. Head to the Locations tab and locate the server that you wish to connect to.


     
  2. Click on the download icon to the right of the server name.



  3. Click on download UDP



    NOTE: In this example, we will be using UDP, however, feel free to use TCP. You can check out the differences here.

 

Configure the OpenVPN client

  1. Log in to your Synology NAS and navigate to Settings.

  2. Select Network Network interface.

  3. Press Add and select Create VPN.

  4. Select OpenVPN.

  5. Fill in the fields as explained below and select Next.

    Profile nameSurfshark (or whatever you prefer)
    Account: Surfshark service username (refer to Get your credentials section in this article)
    Password: Surfshark service password (refer to Get your credentials section in this article)
    Import files: Import a configuration file (refer to Choose a Surfshark server section in this article)


    Once you fill everything in, press Next.

  6. Select the created profile and press Connect. After a successful connection, the status of the profile will change to Connected.

 

Ensure the connection is successful

We always recommend checking if Surfshark VPN is working after setting it up for the first time. You can easily do it by performing Surfshark IP leak test and a DNS leak test. For your convenience, both are available on our website.
